This is a big equipment week for us. I've perfected the Apex trigger groups installation on the Smith and Wesson M&P's and it's baby brother the Shield.  As you know the M&P's come with rather long trigger throws and often they're gritty and not very satisfactory from the manufacturer. The pull weights vary within the realm of reasonableness, but the pull itself is so bad it feels like double the weight  it really is.  So what to do?

Apex Tactical makes several levels of kits to remedy this problem.  For the Shield they make a "carry and duty" kit which changes the sear, plunger safety block and spring, and a few other misc spare parts.  This kit results in a very nice 4.5 pound pull weight with a super crisp let-off.  If you add their aluminum trigger you'll decrease the long pull somewhat and take note that this trigger is the "Glock style" with the safety in the middle vs. the hinged S&W design. Overall a safe reasonable way to improve a poor trigger pull and turn it into a very nice crisp pull of 4.5 pounds that feels like 3.  Keep in mind these kits change the timing of your weapon so you need to know how to adjust and set the timing for the new parts, otherwise the gun might not be safe.

For the full size and compact M&P 9's, .40's, and .45's Apex Tactical has their APEX M&P Aluminum Forward Set Sear and Trigger Kit which is almost magical. It contains the same parts and pieces as for the duty/carry Shield kit above,. but this kit is designed for a full size gun that will either be carried on duty weapon or you can install the second set of parts it comes with to achieve a trigger suitable for tactical or competition use.

The best way to describe this is the result is simply the most "1911 like" trigger you'll ever feel on a polymer striker fired weapon bar none. I chose the duty/carry set of parts first and ended up with a 7.1 pound pull that most swear is only 3.5 pounds. There is maybe a 3/32 of take up, followed by a crisp trigger break with zero over travel.

This is the holy grail of polymer striker fired pistols and well worth the rather expensive price. It transforms your M&P from a polymer striker fired pistol that you need to adjust to it's trigger, to a polymer striker fired pistol with a 1911 type trigger that you've known forever. For grins I went ahead and installed the competition kit and was rewarded with a 3 pound trigger that feels even lighter. I could easily be happy with this trigger at any level of competition, and remember I was a 1911 custom builder so I know a good trigger and what they should be.
